The number of Tunisian immigrants who reached Italian coasts illegally has dropped by 20 percent from the beginning of this year until Aug. 31, compared to the same period of 2022, said the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDS) on Wednesday.
« From Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2023, some 9,283 illegal immigrants of Tunisian nationality arrived at Italian shores, compared to 11,172 immigrants during the same period of 2022, » the FTDS on its Facebook page.
Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to cross the Mediterranean every year as Tunisia is one of the main points of access to Europe through irregular channels.
