Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has discussed the latest developments of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in two separate phone calls.
Speaking to Borrell on Monday night, the Iranian top diplomat blamed Israeli government’s policies against the Palestinians for causing the surprise attack launched by the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Israelis, according to a statement published on the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website on Tuesday.
While slamming the West for its indifference toward Israel’s policies and practices against Palestinians, Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the necessity for the international community to support the Palestinians’ rights.
Borrell, for his part, said the priority now is that everyone should think of restoring peace.
According to another statement posted on the Iranian Foreign Ministry website on Tuesday, Amir-Abdollahian said in a telephone conversation with his Qatari counterpart on Monday that upholding and protecting the rights of the Palestinians is a responsibility shared by all Muslim countries.
The Qatari foreign minister said his country had always supported the rights of Palestinians.
The two foreign ministers also highlighted the need for resuming consultations among Muslim states to support Palestine.
Hamas on Saturday launched a surprise attack on Israeli towns adjacent to the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to launch retaliatory strikes on Gaza.
During the attack, Hamas militants broke through the security fence that separate the Gaza Strip from Israel and stormed nearby communities, killing and capturing Israelis.
The death toll and injuries from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have risen to 788 and 4,100, respectively, according to the latest update by the Palestinian Health Ministry on Monday.
Israel’s state-owned Kan TV reported on Monday that the death toll from Hamas’ attack on southern Israel rose to more than 900.
