A former nurse who was suspected of killing some 20 patients at the Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis in Assen is no longer a suspect in some of the deaths, the public prosecution department has told relatives.
Theodoor V was arrested in April but was released from custody in June while the investigation continued.
V had admitted killing at least 20 coronavirus patients because he was concerned about their suffering in conversations with other care providers, one of whom alerted the hospital authorities which triggered the investigation.
According to broadcaster NOS, the man made the comments to staff while he was being treated in a regional mental health clinic in Drenthe, and it was the institution that contacted the authorities.
He still remains a suspect in some cases but the department has not said how many, NOS said.
Officials will now hold face to face meetings with relatives to explain the particular details surrounding each individual case in the coming weeks, the department said. Once that has been done, the department will publish the results of its investigation.
