Sri Lanka Gets New Oxygen Generation Plant Through UNICEF

The Galle Udugama Primary Hospital in Sri Lanka inaugurated its newly constructed Oxygen Generation Plant building supported by the Government of Canada providing a financial contribution of Rs. 200 million through UNICEF.

The unveiling ceremony witnessed the presence of Christian Skoog, UNICEF’s representative in Sri Lanka, Eric Walsh, the Canadian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, the Minister of Health.

The plant boasts a production capacity of 50,000 ml per month.

The Udugama Primary Hospital, equipped with 150 beds, requires approximately 10,000 litres of oxygen monthly. The surplus production of 40,000 litres will be distributed to neighboring district’s primary, and peripheral hospitals, including Elipitiya, Balapitiya and Nagoda.

This initiative not only ensures self-sufficiency for the Udugama Primary Hospital but also alleviates the financial burden that would otherwise be incurred by procuring oxygen from the private sector.

Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana acknowledged the vital role played by the Canadian government and UNICEF, expressing gratitude for their ongoing contributions to strengthen the country’s healthcare services, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
